After what happened last year (there were six semifinals in a row scheduled from 9 a.m.-9 p.m., the final game was washed out, and the Class C final had to be pushed back until Sunday), the state wisely decided to play the semifinals in each class at the same time, so it will all be done by 4.

Why am I telling you this? Because I don’t know whether Nanuet will be at the football stadium, which has a great internet connection, or the side field, which I’m not sure about. So I’ll either by typing in frequent updates myself, or calling them in at a lesser pace to the office. Either way, stay tuned. And I like everyone’s optimism in the poll, but make no mistake, Nanuet is a big-time underdog.

Update, 11:35 a.m.: I have wireless here and I will be providing scoring updates. Game will start on time at noon.

Update, 11:45: Section 2’s Niskayuna, the team that beat Yorktown by one in the Class B state playoffs, lost to Long Island’s Garden City 17-4 earlier today. Brighton (Section 5) beat Carthage (Section 3) in the other semifinal.

update 12:05 p.m.: SWR strikes first. Jen Devito converts an eight-meter shot with 23:24 left to go up 1-0.

update, 12:08: Kelly Fanshawe ties it for Nanuet on an eight-meter shot. She took a pretty good hit in the scoring area. There’s 21:30 left and SWR just called a timeout.

update, 12:18: Nanuet’s up 3-2 with 14:32 left. Hannah Frey (from Lauren Kahn) put the Golden Knights up 2-1, and K.C. Jentzen just gave them a 3-2 lead. Nanuet has also hit two posts so the lead could have been even bigger.

update, 12:25: Nanuet is now leading 4-2. Hannah Frey scored her second goal, both assisted by Lauren Kahn. We’re now in a mandatory water break with 11:43 left.

update, 12:30: Nanuet is up 5-4 with 7:08 left. Frey from Kahn for a third time made it 5-2, but SWR just got two back.

update, 12:36: It’s now tied at 5-5 and Nanuet called timeout with 5:07 left. In othe other semi, Skaneateles (the team that beat Nanuet last year) is leading 7-2 over Honeoye Falls-Lima.

update, 12:46: Nanuet leads 7-5 at the half. Jentzen broke the tie with 2:06 left, and then Courtney McGrath added a goal, assisted by Kelly Fanshawe, with 4.7 seconds to play. Unbelievable job by the Golden Knights so far, who have forced a lot of turnovers with their pressure defense all over the field. Frey has three goals (now 97 on the season) and Kahn has four assists, adding to her Section 1-best total (80).

update, 1:01: SWR just took a 9-8 lead with 21:17 left. Kahn gave Nanuet an 8-5 lead 1:10 into the second half, but the Wildcats scored four straight, three in the last 24 seconds.No timeout for Nanuet though.

update 1:10: It’s now 10-8 SWR with 15:59 left. Frey also received a yellow card and is still out for 45 more seconds. Nanuet’s gone eight minutes without scoring.

update, 1:15: It’s 12-8 SWR with 12:00 left. The Wildcats are on a 7-0 run over the last 10:50. They are controlling draws, showing patience on offense and converting easy scoring chances. Mandatory water break now.

update, 1:22: 13-8 SWR with 7:42 left. Nanuet just called its final timeout. The run is now 8-0 over the past 15 minutes.

update 1:33: SWR wins 14-8. Nanuet goes the final 23:50 without scoring. SWR ends on a 9-0 run and will play Skaneateles for the title tomorrow at noon.

SWR won the state title last year, and has won the Long Island championship three years in a row. And how about this quote from the coach: “The second half has been our half all year. If we’re not running teams into the ground in the second half, something is wrong.”

Definitely something to watch for on Friday. The Golden Knights have speed and stamina.

In other news, ESG coach John Callanan thinks he’ll have a final roster ready by Friday. Also, tomorrow I’ll have some more information on Nanuet’s state semifinal opponent.

I’m can’t be sure how accurate these lists are (the updates appear to have stopped in 2006, before Yorktown won its fourth state title), but this is still remarkable. Courtney Miller (above) may have scored the third-most goals in a season (125) all-time in the state, while Lauren Kahn of Nanuet may have the third-most assists (76), with teammate Kelly Fanshawe in fourth (74). Of course Kahn and Fanshawe are still going.

Speaking of that, the Long Island Class C championship is today at 5, which will determine who Nanuet plays. I will have an update on the winnner as soon it becomes available, though I will be covering the boys games at Yorktown today so there will be a delay before I can post it.

(update, 11 a.m.: the boys lacrosse games at Yorktown have all been moved to tomorrow. No word on the Long Island games yet.)

Justin Jones was at the game, and here’s his report. Nanuet will now face the Long Island winner (Manhasset or Shoreham-Wading River). The other semifinal will be Section 3’s Skaneateles (who beat Nanuet 19-4 in the state semis last season) and Section 5’s Honeoye Falls-Lima. All four possible semifinalists are ranked in the top 6 in the latest state poll.

I’ll have a lot more leading up to the semifinal this week, which is noon Friday at SUNY Cortland. And assuming all goes well with the internet at SUNY Cortland, I will also have live scoring updates during the game.

Nanuet can’t look ahead, but I can. If the Golden Knights win, they will play at SUNY Cortland Friday at noon in the state semis against the Long Island champ, either Manhasset or Shoreham-Wading River. SWR is second and Manhasset third in the most recent state rankings, while Nanuet is 14th.

Also, the all-America selections were made last night, but I can’t release the list until all the players have been notified. I will post them as soon as I can. And ESG coach John Callanan said he would send over his roster early next week.

The Golden Knights will play O’Neill in the regional final Sunday at 2 at Dietz Stadium in Kingston. Congrats to the 33/65 who thought Nanuet would advance the furthest. Now will far do you think they will go? Here’s a hint—it will not be Sunday. Nanuet beat O’Neill 16-3 last year.

Update 9:23 p.m.:

Guilderland 13, Lakeland/Panas 4 FINAL.
Chelsea Robinson led L/P with two goals and one assist.

Update 8:37 p.m.:

Guilderland 8, Lakeland/Panas 2 – HALFTIME
After Chelsea Robinson tied the score at 2-2, Guilderland scored the final six goals to end the half.

UPDATE: NANUET vs. ALBANY ACADEMY

7:20 p.m.:

Nanuet won 19-6. Nanuet advances to play James O’Neill on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Dietz Stadium in the state regional final. K.C Jentzen led Nanuet with five goals. Kelly Fanshawe had three goals and six assists.

6:25 p.m.:

Nanuet leads 12-5 at halftime. Nanuet scored its 12 goals in the first 9:30 of the game and led 9-2. K.C. Jentzen has four goals. Kelly Fanshawe has two goals and three assists.

UPDATE: YORKTOWN-NISKAYUNA

UPDATE 2

Yorktown lost to Niskayuna 13-12 to end the season 14-6-1.

Jaimie Morrison had five goals and two assists to lead the ‘Huskers.

Nisky led by as many as four in the second half and led 13-10 with five minutes remaining.

UPDATE 1

Niskayuna leads 7-5 at the half. Jaimie Morrison has three goals for the ‘Huskers, who had led 2-1 and 3-2 before giving up four straight goals within 1:23 midway through the half.

The winner will play Section 9 champion Saugerties in the state quarterfinals on Sunday.
