Nanuet-SWR live from Cortland

June
13

Stay here for updates from the Nanuet-SWR state semifinal.

After what happened last year (there were six semifinals in a row scheduled from 9 a.m.-9 p.m., the final game was washed out, and the Class C final had to be pushed back until Sunday), the state wisely decided to play the semifinals in each class [...]

SWR won the state title last year, and has won the Long Island championship three years in a row. And how about this quote from the coach: “The second half [...]

Nearing state records

June
10

I’m can’t be sure how accurate these lists are (the updates appear to have stopped in 2006, before Yorktown won its fourth state title), but this is still remarkable. Courtney Miller (above) may have scored the third-most goals in a season (125) all-time in the state, while Lauren Kahn of Nanuet may have the third-most [...]

Scouting Nanuet’s opponent

June
6

James I. O’Neill is the only Class C team in Section 9, so they automatically advanced to the state tournament. Still, they have won 11 in a row and have that section’s leading scorer in Suzy Williams (43 goals, 45 assists). More information can be found on Varsity 845.

Nanuet can’t look ahead, but I can. [...]

All-section and all-league teams

June
6

Suffern led the way with 8 all-section players, followed by Lakeland/Panas (7), Yorktown (6), and Nanuet and North Rockland (5).

Also, the all-America selections were made last night, but I can’t release the list until all the players have been notified. I will post them as soon as I can. And ESG coach John Callanan [...]

Then there was one

June
5

Only Nanuet came out of Section 2 with a victory yesterday, as Yorktown and Lakeland/Panas saw their seasons end at the University at Albany. The difference for Nanuet and Laklenad/Panas was speed, while for Yorktown it may have been experience.

Here are the stories for Yorktown, Lakeland/Panas and Nanuet.

The Golden Knights will play O’Neill in the [...]

Here is the schedule for the rest of the state playoffs. By the way, information on the Section 2 opponents can be found on the Albany Times Union girls lacrosse page.

I think it’s safe to say that Nanuet and Yorktown are about 50/50 or a hair better to win, while Lakeland/Panas is a clear [...]

The good thing about all six favorites advancing to the final is that there should be some great lacrosse on Saturday, and unlike previous rounds where every game was the same time, I will finally get to watch all of it. Here’s a preview. I’d love to hear your thoughts, and of course add your [...]

Semifinal previews

May
29

Quick turnaround today, except for the top seeds in Class A, who finally get to play a meaningful game for the first time in more than a week. Does anyone dare to predict an upset? I just can’t see it.

Class A
No. 4 Mahopac (8-10) at No. 1 Suffern (16-1-1), 7 p.m.: Suffern beat Mahopac 16-7 [...]

Wednesday schedule

May

It was three more playoff games, three more blowouts on Tuesday. Hopefully today will bring a change, with three matchups that were close in the regular season—Greeley-Brewster, Scarsdale-Mamaroneck and Nyack-Edgemont. Nanuet, Pearl River and Rye will also host quarterfinals.

The semifinals are still scheduled for Thursday, so in Class B, it will be interesting to see [...]

So the first round wasn’t the most competitive: 22-2, 20-2, 16-4, 19-8, 14-4, 14-5, 15-8, 11-6, 11-7. Average margin of victory: 10.7 goals. And no upsets.

Here’s a look at what the next round has in store. Unfortunately all nine quarterfinal games will be played on Tuesday (eight at 4:30 p.m.), which means I can only [...]

Playoff scoreboard

May

Freshman Melina Juliano, who was recently called up from the J.V., had three goals and two assists as Putnam Valley defeated North Salem 11-6.

It was the first playoff win for the two-year-old program, and the third time that No. 8 Putnam Valley beat No. 9 North Salem this season. Interestingly enough, North Salem — also [...]
