Section 1 tournament
Finals at Torne Valley
Class A: No. 1 Suffern vs. No. 2 Lakeland/Panas, 7 p.m.
The Mounties have not been blowing the doors off teams like they did during the season, but they’re still getting the job done. The Rebels have also been in a string of close games. Throw in the fact these two teams have JUST a bit of history playing for sectional titles—Lakeland/Panas won six-straight sectional titles between 2006-11, beating Suffern in every single final—and this game takes on an even more interesting twist.
With all that being said, this Mounties team just seems too strong from top to bottom. There is no doubt that Lakeland/Panas has some studs, but I think Suffern’s depth is just too much.
Pick: Suffern, 14-10.
Class B: No. 1 Somers vs. No. 2 Yorktown, 3 p.m.
If all goes according to plan, this one should be a thriller. These two teams played a fantastic game about a month ago at Somers that ended up being the Tuskers’ only tie of the season. Somers had the game in hand, but let it slip away down the stretch. Yorktown has been one of the most consistent teams in the area, but I think Somers, when playing its best, is the best team in Class B.
Pick: Somers, 13-12.
Class C: No. 2 Pearl River vs. No. 4 Bronxville, 5 p.m.
Pearl River has the ability to slow it down, but I think this will be a shootout. There is a lot of offense on both sides, so scoring shouldn’t exactly be difficult for either team. The difference could come at the draw circle, where the Broncos hold an advantage. Not many players can match up with Gretchen Richter’s height. That’ll come in handy if this becomes a last-one-to-score situation.
Pick: Bronxville 16-14.
