HILLBURN Bronxville may have had trouble getting out of the gate during Thursday’s Section 1 Class C final, but when the Broncos got going, they were unstoppable.
The fourth-seeded Broncos dropped second-seeded Pearl River 16-10 at the Torne Valley Sports Complex, using an 8-0 scoring run for most of the first half as a foundation to their first section title in program history.
“From Day 1, we were like, ‘We’re winning the section finals,’ that’s what we want, and I’m so proud of my team for getting here,” said Bronxville senior Gretchen Richter, who scored four of her five goals during the run. “Our defense stepped up and attack really got the momentum going. It was just an all-around awesome job by everyone.”
Pearl River scored two early goals, then was held scoreless for almost 17 minutes while the Broncos ran wild. The Pirates closed out the first half with two goals in the final 30 seconds to stay in the game, 8-4. Pearl River sent a last-second shot over the crossbar to end the half.
The Broncos opened the second half on a 5-0 run before Pearl River responded with a six-goal run of its own to pull within three with more than 10 minutes left in regulation.
Bronxville coach Sharon Robinson wasn’t surprised by Pearl River’s grit, adding that she knew the Pirates could be “explosive” and that the Broncos would have to “be careful” throughout the game.
“We knew they would be a tough opponent,” said Robinson, who has coached at Bronxville for seven years, serving as head coach for the past four. “We knew they were never going to give up.”
Senior Grace O’Toole scored four goals and freshman Mason Warble added a hat trick in the win. Junior Maggie Davin scored four goals for the Pirates.
Bronxville will play the Section 9-Section 2 winner at 2 p.m. May 31 at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
