MAMARONECK Thanks to a seven-goal run in the first half, No. 6 Mamaroneck built a large lead and never looked back in its 19-9 win over visiting No. 11 Clarkstown South in the first round of the Class A sectional tournament.
In the opening moments, there seemed to be some upset potential as the Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than five minute in.
“I think a lot had to do with butterflies in our stomach and the anxiety of this being it,” Mamaroneck coach Christina Smith said. “Once you lose, you’re done.”
The Tigers settled down and rattled off seven-straight goals to build a 7-2 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half.
Olivia Jensen (four goals, two assists), Katie Cotter (four goals) and Greta Massey (three goals) led the Tigers (10-6-1), while Jaime Morris posted a game-high six goals for the Vikings (3-14).
Mamaroneck will face a familiar opponent next. The Tigers head to No. 3 White Plains, a team they lost to twice this season, for the quarterfinals Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Smith, however, isn’t fazed by the losses. The former John Jay coach won the Class B sectional title last season by defeating Yorktown, a team the Indians had lost to twice in the regular season, in the finals.
“I’ve repeated that over and over to the girls,” said Smith of her experience last season. “The motivation is there. They’ve worked so hard this year. That’s the expectation.”
