Here is Mike Zacchio’s story on John Jay handing Lakeland/Panas its first loss of the season.
John Jay may not be ready to surrender its section championship just yet.
The reigning Class B champion Indians (9-5), who graduated more than half of its offensive firepower in Delaney Spencer, Molly O’Reilly and Journal News Westchester/Putnam player of the year Sarah Lang – a trio that combined for more than 175 goals and 120 assists last year, proved they are still one of the top teams to beat after handing Class A foe Lakeland/Panas (11-1-1) its first loss, 8-5, on Monday.
Michigan-committed junior Amanda Flayhan scored a hat trick in the win. Dakota Ademec added a pair of goals for the Indians.
After an 0-4 start to the season, first-year coach Ali Steinberg, who played collegiately at Rutgers two years ago, said the team has found their roles and adapted to the game – including herself.
“As a coach, not only is it hard to adapt from college play, but also individually motivate each player,” Steinberg said. “What works for one (player) may not necessarily work for another. We’re learning from each other.”
Steinberg said that with the level of play the team is displaying now, they expect “nothing short of what they accomplished last year,” referring to a spot in the state semifinals.
Junior Molly Fitzpatrick scored a hat trick, including her 200th-career goal for the Rebels.
