CHAPPAQUA It wasn’t the offensive showcase from a few weeks ago, but Horace Greeley still got the result it wanted.
The Quakers topped visiting Ossining 14-11 Friday for their first league win at home this season.
Horace Greeley beat the Pride 22-21 on April 21 at Ossining in what was the highest-scoring game amongst Section 1 teams this season.
“Last time was kind of run and gun and there were way to many goals scored last time on both ends,” said Quakers senior Hannah Dunn, who had four goals in Friday’s win. “We wanted to kind of slow the game down. Play our game.”
Horace Greeley coach Annamarie Marasco said one of her team’s main focuses was limiting Pride junior Abby Squirrell, who had six goals and three assists in the teams’ first meeting.
Quakers junior Bernie Grant held Squirrell to only a goal and an assist Friday.
“I knew that I had to be a little more aggressive and up on her, because she’s a very good player,” Grant said. “I knew that I had my teammates behind me, so it was a lot easier knowing I could trust them if I got in trouble.”
Grant didn’t just make an impact on the defensive end of the field. The defender scored with two seconds remaining in the half to give Horace Greeley an 8-7 lead, one it would not relinquish the remainder of the game.
The Quakers (9-2-1) opened up the second half on a four-goal run to extend their lead over Ossining (3-9) to 12-7 with 14:07 remaining.
“It was a must win for us,” Marasco said. “It’s kind of satisfying to get two wins against Ossining in the league.”
