Scarsdale was able to come away with its first league win of the season, a 10-8 victory at Bronxville, thanks to a change at the draw circle during halftime and strong second-half defense by the Raiders.
Trailing 6-5 at halftime, Scarsdale coach Genette Zonghetti had junior Sarah Mehlman take draws in the second half to match the height of Broncos senior Gretchen Richter.
The switched paid off, as Mehlman was able to challenge Richter and get the Raiders some draw controls.
The Raiders’ defense also played its part, holding Bronxville scoreless until the final minute of the game as Scarsdale went on a five-goal run.
“I’m really proud of the girls with the win,” Zonghetti said. “Our defense really stepped up. … Julia Ross (five saves) made some key saves in the second half.”
Scarsdale (4-3) senior Lindsey Repp had a game-high five goals, including her 200th career goal. Mehlman added four goals and an assist. Richter and Taylor Sears each scored three goals for Bronxville (6-2).
It was a key win for the Raiders, who dropped their league opener at home to White Plains Tuesday 14-5.
“It was really important for us,” said Zonghetti of getting the win. “We have a young team. … To see them bounce back like that after a loss was great.”
