File this under example #1,450 of how Section 1 lacrosse is continuing to grow.
Two Yorktown graduates will square off in the Women’s Lacrosse World Cup final Saturday at 3 p.m. in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.
Katrina Dowd (Yorktown ’06) has had quite the tournament for Team USA. The 2010 Northwestern graduate is currently the leading scorer for the red white and blue. USA is looking to win its second straight World Cup. Dowd spent last season as an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina where she worked with Fox Lane’s Sammy Jo Tracy and fellow Huskers Lindsay and Sarah Scott as they captured the program’s first national championship.
Alexis Venechanos (Yorktown ’99) has been doing a different type of leading. The 2003 Maryland graduate is the head coach of Team Canada. Our neighbors to the north has never finished higher than third at the World Cup, so Venechanos has already made great strides. Venechanos has spent the past three seasons as the head coach at Ohio State, coaching fellow Husker Katie Frederick.
