Another week in the books can only mean one thing: It is time to honor the Beast of the week. For those of you unfamiliar with the award, the #BOTW is awarded to a player who not only puts up big numbers, but does it when her team needs it the most.
As expected, this week had plenty of worthy recipients. Scarsdale’s Lindsey Repp put up monster numbers, averaging nine points as she helped her team go 2-1 to start the season. Bronxville’s Gretchen Richter also had an impressive week. The junior helped the Broncos to a 3-0 start, including leading the team with five points in their big win over Fox Lane.
Still, one stood above the rest…
Molly Fitzpatrick, Lakeland/Panas—
It’s been an interesting nine months for the Rebels. After falling in the Class A sectional final for the first time in five years, Lakeland/Panas had the task of rebuilding with a team that brought back only three starters. Things got worse when senior captain Gianna Benson tore her ACL the Saturday before the Rebels’ season opener.
Lakeland/Panas has grown accustom to winning though, and they did exactly that. By weeks end the Rebels were 2-0, thanks in large part because of the play from sophomore midfielder Molly Fitzpatrick.
Fitzpatrick opened the season up with a four-point performance at Byram Hills, helping lead a team made up of many first-time varsity players to a come-from-behind win against the 2012 Class C sectional finalists.
Still, Fitzpatrick saved her best for last. She posted seven points against the reigning Class B champions in a 12-10 win over Fox Lane.
While the past nine months might have been tough for the Rebels, it all won’t matter depending on how the next three go. Fitzpatrick will play a key role in that.
