First real big day of games of the season. Lots of interesting results to take in.
First up, the reigning Class A secitonal champions started off the season on the right foot with a 10-4 win over Pearl River. Kaitlyn Rau had a big day with three goals and an assist. Jeanie Peluso (two goals, one assist) also had a solid outing. Peluso has struggled with injuries over the past two season. If she can stay healthy, she’ll be a huge help to the Red Raiders this season.
John Jay also got back on the right foot with a W against Somers. It wasn’t easy though. The Indians jumped out to a 9-4 lead, but were outscored 8-5 to end the game.
The Quakers haven’t posted a season above .500 since 2007, but they return 13 players from last season. I think they could be a team that can stir things up in Class A. Horace Greeley is not a team to overlook.
Speaking of not overlooking, two players are making an early case for the Beast of the Week award. White Plains’ Kate Leone had 10 points (six goals, four assists) in a 16-2 win over Dobbs Ferry. Meanwhile, Bronxville’s Gretchen Richter had an eight-point day (five goals, three assists) in the Broncos’ 20-5 win over Pelham. Holy Child’s Maggie Welsh posted nine points (seven goals, two assists) in Holy Child’s 17-14 loss to Hamden Hall.
