With many teams already participating in scrimmages this week I thought it might be a good time to release the 2013 team capsules.
A big thank you to the coaches for submitting these profiles. They have been a great help already.
Believe it or not we are less than a week away from the start of the season. Next week teams officially take the field to start the season. I’ll be on hand for a couple of games.
Also my official season preview will run in the paper March 30th, so keep an eye out for that.
As always if you’re looking for daily updates of the ongoing girls lacrosse season follow me @LoHud_DeFran.
Finally, if you don’t see your team listed below send me an email at ddefrances@lohud with your team’s capsule in the same format and I’ll be happy to update the blog. If you’re not a coach or AD, urge them to submit one. I’d like to have the most comprehensive preview possible.

The team returns three starters, so inevitably will experience growing pains. Molly Fitzpatrick returns as the leading scorer with 50 goals in 2012. Lakeland Panas will have good leadership with captains Rebecca Bard, Gianna Bensaia and Kristen Conroy leading the charge. A proud tradition of 10 Section 1 Championships will motivate the young Rebels.
Coach: Jim Lieto (5th Season)
Last season’s record: 8-7-2
Playoffs: Lost to Mamaroneck in quarterfinals
Key Returners: Gabby Anderson, Sr., G.; Samantha Karner, Sr., A.; Katie Schulz, Sr. D.; Meagan Wright, Sr., D.; Anna Raymond, Jr., G.; Erin Moloney, Jr., M.; Carly Weiss, Jr., A.; Kelly Maxwell, So., A.; Kim Harker, So., M.; Sarah Quarto, So., M.
Newcomers: Megan Korovich, Jr., M.; Daniella Martins, Jr., D.; Delaney Volpe, So., D.; Sarah Lilley, So., M.; Jane Kasparian, So., M.; Julia Marinelli, So., M.; Francesca Ferreira, So., A.; Alyssa Kirby, Fr., D.; Tara Ravoli, Fr., M.; Vicky Moundroukas, Fr., A.
Coach’s Notes: Captains Gabby Anderson and Sam Karner return for their fourth year on Varsity after earning all section last year. Gabby has been the starting goalie since Freshmen year and is the cornerstone of the defense. Gabby is rock solid in the net, she never misses anything involved with the team and always plays at a high level. It is a great comfort going out there knowing that Gabby will get the job done. Sam returns for her senior year as our leading points scorer last season with 53 goals and 25 assists. As you can see in Sam’s stat she is both a great scorer and a great distributer. These skills will be key this year as we lost 5 of our top 6 scorers from a year ago. Both captains have been working hard in the offseason working out and teaching the younger girls.
Meagan Wright is a returning starter on defense who is successfully coming off a knee surgery last season. Meagan will be joined by returning starter Sarah Quarto, who will also be looking to contribute on offense this year, Katie Schulz who will be taking on an expanded role, and Alyssa Kirby a quick freshman joining varsity this year. Both Katie and Alyssa will be adding a lot of speed to the fast and skilled defenders Wright and Quarto. Katie is the fastest girl on the team and has the mindset that no ground ball is too far away for her to get. Daniella Martins and Delaney Volpe enter their first varsity season and will look to add depth to the defense and contribute immediately. Anna Raymond returns for her third year on Varsity, she has worked hard in the off-season and shown wonderful progress. Along with Gabby, Anna gives us two tremendous goaltenders. Coach Jessica McDonough does a terrific job making sure these girls are on top of their game and she looks to lead one of the best defenses yet at Mahopac.
Kim Harker is the lone returning starter on the midfield, Kim is one of the best athletes on the team. She plays at a high level and continues to work hard at her improving her game. Kim will be joined by Erin Moloney who is looking to play a bigger role this year, after a good first year on varsity as a sophomore last year. Newcomers Megan Korovich, Sarah Lilley, Jane Kasparian, Julia Marinelli, and Tara Ravoli all will be playing important roles in the midfield. All five girls come of extremely successful JV careers and are great multi-sport athletes who should jump right in and work well with Harker and Moloney.
On attack Sam Karner is the lone returning starter. Sam will be joined by Carly Weiss and Kelly Maxwell, both of whom move to attack from the midfield last year and are looking to contribute right away. Newcomer Vicky Moundroukas is an exciting addition to the team and will add depth at attack.
This season we will need to gel as a team early, we have lots of girls who are stepping into new roles right away and they are excited. The competition in Section 1 Class A girls lacrosse is great as always with perennial powers North Rockland, Lakeland-Panas, and Suffern along with up and coming teams like Mamaroneck. In my opinion we are in the toughest league in all of the section with Lakeland-Panas, Yorktown, Brewster, and John Jay. We are looking to compete with all of these teams and be playing at our best in May to advance far into the sectionals.
Coach: Laurie DeRosa (4th season)
Team record: 11-3-4
Playoffs: Lost to Lakeland in semifinals
Key returnees: Keira Taussig, Sr., M.; Liza Stephanz, Sr., G., Hannah Fitzgerald, Sr., M.; Katherine Grinnell, Jr., A.; Greta Massey, Jr., D.; Gabby Anselmo, Jr., G.; Maggie McNally, Jr., D.
Other contributors: Olivia Peniston, Jr., A.; Sydney Segal, Jr.; and several sophomores will be expected to compete for playing time and possible starting positions.
Coaches Notes: The Tigers lost several seniors to graduation from a team that captured it’s first league title in 20 years. This year’s team must mature quickly and several players will have to step up for the Tigers to be successful. This will be a rebuilding year and the team needs time to learn how to play together. In order to be successful the players must rely on each other.
Coach: Cece Berger (10th season)
Last season’s record: 11-6-1
Playoffs: Lost to Fox Lane in semifinals

Newcomers: Bernadette Grant, So.
Coach’s notes: The team returns 13 players from last year, with most of them seeing substantial playing time last year. Maura Grant and Miranda Litwak, the team’s captains, have been starters since their freshman year and have the drive and intensity to lead the team this year. Olivia Statman, Jr. Started as a defensive wing as a ninth-grader. She missed the entire last season due to a knee injury and returns this year to anchor the defense.

Coach’s notes: We have two all-section players returning on offense, Molly O’Reilly and Sarah Lang. Last year Molly led the team with 29 assists, and Sarah was the second highest scorer with 48 goals. In the midfield Delaney Spencer, Emma Gorman and Amanda Flayhan return with great transition and intensity. On Defense Liz Sheeran and Mary McAvey have been known to use their speed to create fast breaks. Although it will be hard to replace Lauren Murray, who currently starts at Northwestern University, John Jay has 13 returners and 8 newcomers who are eager to work hard everyday.
Coach: Kathryn Perrella (5th season)
Last season’s record: 12-4
Playoffs: Lost to Pearl River in quarterfinals
Key Returners: Andie O’Sullivan, Jr.; Kate Fischer, Jr.; Taylor O’Sullivan, Jr.; Melissa McCarter, Jr.
Newcomers: Kristen Soeder, G.
Coach’s notes: With only 2 Seniors this year we are a young team that has moved up into the B Class this year as opposed to being in the Class C. We lost major players on defense and are looking for some new talent in that position. Returning midfielders and attackers will hopefully lead our team to a winning season.
Coach: Dan Ricci (5th season)
Last season’s record: 10-8
Playoffs: Lost to Fox lane in quarterfinals
Key returners: Molly Malone, Sr., M.; Alex Cristello, Sr., A.; Danielle Gervacio, Sr., A., Abby Squirrell, So., M.; Daniella Ferrao, Sr., D.; Jalay Knowles, So., D.; Gabby Hagerman, So., M.
Newcomers: Christine Kopera, Sr., G.; Katie Rink, Jr., G.
Coach’s notes: We return most of our scoring with Alex Cristello – 79 goals and 22 assists, Molly Malone with 67 goals and 9 assists and Danielle Gervacio with 61 goals and 8 assists and Abby Squirrel with 34 Goals and 5 assists. Our midfield will be very strong with Malone, Squirrel and Hagerman all very good athletes, At attack we have two good goal scorers in Cristello and Gervacio, we just need to fill the other two attatck positons and offensively we should be pretty good. On defense we return two starters in Knowles and Ferrao so we need to find to people there. In the goal we graduated Grace Lombardi who was very good for us. Christine Kopera missed last year with a torn ACL so her and junior Katie Rink will compete for time in the cage.

The Dutchmen return junior Jules Harris, sophomores Brianna McCleary, Amanda Paul, Gigi Schindele and 8th grader Carmella Liscio in the midfield. With returning senior Ashley Mezzacappa and 8th grader Julia Kane, TZ looks for improved goaltending. The Dutchmen look to integrate their experience and youth to improve on last year’s record.

Coach’s notes: We will put a very young group out on the field this year and hope to get better every day. The senior leadership of Amanda Makar on defense and Gaby Berne on offense will be huge. Our strength will be in our midfield play. We will need our defense and goalie to learn on the fly. Offensively, the goals should come from many different sources.
