No. 2 North Rockland held strong in the final minutes to maintain a 10-9 lead at Fox Lane High School Thursday night to defeat top-seeded Lakeland/Panas. Led by Lauren Mazza’s three goals and Tara Monaghan’s two goals and two assists, the Red Raiders were able to win their first sectional title in program history (varsity program began in 1996) and dethrone the Rebels, the five-time reigning champs.
“We never gave up,” said Monaghan, a senior. “We worked so hard for this. I knew it was going to be close, so we had to always be ready.”
Added head coach Greg Borchers: “Everyone has been picking against us this whole year. They’ve been playing together since 4th/5th grade, and they said we want to do it our senior year. Lakeland/Panas is very athletic on defense and likes to run, so we tried to negate those two things.”
