Girls lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley

All-Star Showcase

June
17

Moonlight Lacrosse is running a Section 1 All Star Showcase this coming Sunday at John Jay High School. There will be over 60 girls from Section 1 attending (who were nominated by their respective HS coaches), and the players will be split into teams and play a round-robin format.

College coaching staffs have also been invited, and Moonlight will be videotaping the games and mailing DVD’s to colleges that have requested them. Unlike other sports, there’s no exceptional senior game in girls lacrosse, so this sounds the next best thing. The boys had a successful showcase last weekend at John Jay.

do you mean the boys had a game at Yorktown? There weas a senior showcase at Yorktown. Do you have a list of any coaches who plan to attend the Sunday showcase and is this open to the public to watch?

    LaxRUs,

I think you mean the boys exceptional senior game. This is different. Last Sunday at John Jay current sophs & juniors had a all star recruiting showcase. Over 20 colleges attended. This Sunday at John Jay is the girls showcase. Yes it is open to the public.

This is the boys showcase info: http://moonlightlacrosse.com/Page.asp?n=23177&snid=184331311&org=moonlightlacrosse.com

Should this really be called a Section 1 showcase? It makes it sound like something run by the coaching association when it appears once you go to their web site that this a private money making company not something related to a school(non-profit)??
    Something seems fishy out there

  4. LAXER

I agree with Long time Lacrosse Player. It’s sad but this is another pay to play event.
We would be better off having a Senior All Star Game or Showcase similar to what the Field Hockey players have and is free to all participants.

Section I does not sponsor anything for lax girls. The coaches would need to put something together and have it approved by the section for sanction. I am not sure that this is the right thing but at least someone is doing something for the girls. It takes time to build up and girls sports dont move as fast. Boys run a 7v7 fund-raiser in the fall to help pay for section 1 dinner and awards. Who pays for the girls section 1 dinner and awards? Do AA’s and All Section get a $$ award. New to this world.

was this event planned because ny cancelled empires?
how helpful is it really? if the girls don’t practice with the girls who are on their “team” before this event, isn’t it just a glorified pick-up game? who will be coaching them during the event to set up plays? what is being showcased if its a free-for-all?

how much is moonlight making on the showcase?

  7. Laxilla

For years and years there was an exceptional seniors game for girls lax. What happened? Is our coaching association falling apart?

  8. pearl river fan

Laxilla is right, I remember playing in the Exceptional Seniors Game under the lights at Nyack when I graduated Pearl River in 1998. But I am almost positive that was a Rockland County game, not all of Section 1.

  9. A longtime Lacrosse Player

Nope- It was a section game as I played as it in it and I went to high school in Westchester.
It was a great time and a whole lot of fun.

  10. lax family

section 1 lacrosse showcase was great to see so many
girls playing lax at a high level. a good day to see

how well all the girls got along and how easily they were able to play
together as a team. great job by moonlight lacrosse the

smiles on the players faces said it all

  11. Yeah

I wish the teams were a little more equal though, but yes seeing the girls get along was great to watch.

  12. oldschool

It was a overall nice event focused on the girls playing – no score being kept. I think for many of the girls it was just about having fun and playing lacrosse with no pressure. The event did demonstrate the enormous depth of talent in Section 1. Very nice to see.

  13. not a know it all

I agree with Yeah… the teams were really unequal. However, the girls are a great group of girls who love to play with each other and it is wonderful to watch the comradery. No one from North Rockland? I would have thought to have seen Anna Berman and Taylor Moore.

  14. lacrosse

agreed that the teams werent extremely equal, but there really is no fair way to make up even teams. the showcase was a great way to have some fun and get all the girls together.

  15. A longtime Lacrosse Player

There was a big recruiting tournament this past weekend in Maryland and the top players from the area that are on travel teams choose not to play in this local tournament

    Longtime Lax Player –

For the size of this showcase (not tournament) there was a great representation of talent and the girls enjoyed themselves. There were several “top players” from the area at the showcase. The 15+ All Section Players, 20+ All Elite Players, 20+ All League Players and 2 All American players that attended on Sunday represent the top in the area. Many of these players are on travel teams as well. It was nice to go to something hosted in our area for a change.

  17. booyah

Anyone know if the this showcase was a section 1 sponsored event and what is or who is Moonlight lacrosse? I heard that they charged to participate. Is that legal? Were the college coaches paid also?

  18. A longtime Lacrosse Player

It wass not a section 1 sponsored event but promoted like it was one. They were also costs for the girls to pay to play. It seemed like Moonlight made some big $$ off the girls.

  19. Player

I played in the All Star Showcase, it was very well run. I thought it might be disorganized but I was proven wrong. I had a great time and I look forward to hopefully playing again next year.

  20. lacrosse

free food was given to the players as well as tapes of them playing to 3 colleges of the players chose.. as a participant, i do not mind paying money for me to showcased…. moonlight should not be expected to pay for the cost of tapes and sending envelopes to colleges
