Yorktown-Garden City scoring updates

June
13

Yorktown will face Garden City in the Class B championship game today at 2:30 p.m. at SUNY Cortland. I’ll be posting scoring updates in the comments section below so stay tuned.

In the meantime, click on the teams to read about Yorktown and Nyack’s experiences in the semifinals. Here’s five things to watch for today:

1. Who will step up for Yorktown? In yesterday’s semifinals, it was sophomore Lindsay Scott who had a career-high five goals and seven points. Which Yorktown player will break out on the biggest stage today?

2. Two powers collide. Yorktown could win its fifth state title, which would match West Genesee for second on the all-time list in girls lacrosse. The leader? Garden City, which has won nine since the tournament began in 1995. The Cornhuskers titles came in 1996 (Division II), 1997 and ‘98 (Division I) and 2006 (Class A).

3. Is Garden City vulnerable? The Tronjans have lost four games this season – matching their loss total from the last four seasons combined. But none of Garden City’s losses were against Class B teams, and the Trojans won their two state playoff games by a combined score of 32-7.

4. There’s lots of Division I talent. Yorktown has five players headed to Division I programs next season. Garden City also is loaded, led by midfielder Caroline McTiernan (Virginia) and attacker Lauren Terracciano (Massachusetts).

5. Don’t forget the depth factor. This is the first time Yorktown will have to play two tough opponents back-to-back. The Cornhuskers are well-conditioned, and the timeframe is the same for both teams, though Garden City had a 10-goal lead at halftime yesterday and could rest its starters in the second half.

  3. Harold Gutmann

The teams are still warming up, so with the anthem, linups, etc, the game should start around 2:40.
In the meantime, here’s what’s happened so far. Long Island is 2-0 and will go for the sweep against Yorktown.

Class A — Farmingdale 10, Guilderland 9: Farmingdale scored twice in the final minute, including a free position with nine seconds left, to win its first title after being the runner-up the past two years.
Class C — Shoreham-Wading River 13, Honeoye Falls-Lima 11: The score’s a little misleading — SWR led 13-8 with two minutes left. It’s their third straight title. Lindsey Powell scored six goals for HFL.

    :)

  9. Harold Gutmann

GC scored 2:27 in, and Jaimie Morrison just tied it off a pass from Amanda Trendell. 1-1 with 21:43 left. It just started raining but they’ll play through it as long as there’s no lightning.

  10. Harold Gutmann

8-meter shot from Lindsay Scott. 2-1 Yorktown with 20:12 left.

  11. Harold Gutmann

Another 8-meter, this one from Morrison. 3-1 Yorktown, 18:19 left.

  12. Harold Gutmann

GC cut the lead to 3-2, but Morrison won the draw and passed to Bridget Sickles for the goal. 4-2 with 14 minutes left. It is really raining hard now, and a strong wind to boot. Hard to imagine the sun was shining 30 minutes ago.

  13. ytownlax

Come on Yorktown – keep playing hard!!

You deserve this – Can you taste the Title???

  14. somers one

    Many fans make the trip?

  15. Harold Gutmann

GC has scored three straight goals to take a 5-4 lead with 11:08 left. Also, I have just witnessed my first high school girls lacrosse TV timeout (it’s on Time Warner Cable locally).

  31. Harold Gutmann

Yorktown is turning the ball over practically every position against GC’s pressure, and the defense is fouling way too much in the critical scoring area.

  32. ytownlax

plenty of game left today girls – go re-group at the half !!!!!
We’ll be here for you when you come back on the field

  33. ed

  35. Harold Gutmann

    Halftime score: 8-4.
Last 14 minutes were just ugly for Yorktown. It would be much worse if not for Lauren Hayes (9 saves). Still raining hard. Morrison has two goals and an assist for Yorktown. Six girls have scored for GC and their goalie has three saves.

  36. Harold Gutmann

Yorktown is a really good second-half team. I think they definitely make a run, but not sure if it will be enough.
Yorktown is holding its halftime huddle out in the rain, while GC went inside.

  37. PlayURbest

Town is tough. Girls we’ve been in this predicament before, and come back to win! Keep at it, this is for the TITLE!

  38. ytownlax

Watch Rudy at the half!!! Go Team!! You need the famous locker room speech :)

  39. JUST-RE-LAX-N

Harold for crying out loud why would they do that?. I agree Town is a second half team, let’s hope they can get the next couple of goals and then settle down. Does GC look that strong or is more of a case Yorktown is making to many mistakes?.

  40. ytownlax

Come on Girls – you can do it!!

  41. Harold Gutmann

Sarah Scott wins the second-half draw, but another turnover. Not a good start.

  42. kleitner

    Harold

Save by Hayes, but another turnover from Yorktown. 22 minutes left.

  44. PlayURbest

Charlie Murph…if you are are looking down on us from the heavens ….please help us!!!

  45. Harold Gutmann

GC scores to make in transition to make it 9-4 with 19:06 left. Two more possessions without a shot for the Huskers.

  46. ytownlax

  50. Harold Gutmann

Finally some good ball movement on offense. Morrison finds Lindsay Scott cutting to goal. 9-5 with 17:23 remaining. The goal breaks a 23-minute scoring drought.

  51. ytownlax

You can’t give up on Yorktown – ever!!
