State semifinal updates: Nyack loses

June
12

Nyack is playing at 9:30 a.m. and Yorktown is playing at 2:30 p.m. at SUNY Cortland. I’ll be posting updates as often as possible—every 10 minutes or so if I have a good internet connection, or every half hour if I have to call them in to an editor.

The good news for Nyack is that I’m picking against them, just like in the sectional semis and finals. So they have that going for them. I just think HFL is more experienced (state semifinalist last year; this is Nyack’s first state tournament appearance since ‘91), older, healthier, played tougher competition, and has more depth. The Indians have proved doubters wrong before, but they have their work cut out for them this morning. I give them a 5 percent chance.

Yorktown-Canandaigua should be a lot closer, though again I’m giving the edge to Section 5. Here’s my reasoning—the Cornhuskers aren’t blowing Canandaigua out. So if they win, it will be in a tough, back-and-forth game decided in the final minutes, and that’s something Yorktown hasn’t faced all season. I know they practice those situations, but it’s not the same as being a game like that. Still, Yorktown is experienced, senior-laden and very talented, so I put their chances at 40 percent.

What does everyone else think?

UPDATE, 11 A.M.:The final score is Honeoye Falls-Lima 18, Nyack 6. Caroline Chesterman had two goals and two assists to lead the Indians. Katie O’Gorman scored twice, and Tina Chesterman had a goal and an assist.

Lindsey Powell had six goals and an assist for HFL, who led 17-3 with 10:30 remaining.
