Section final predictions

May
30

Here are semifinal stories from Yorktown, Lakeland and Rye. Now on to the finals. Since this is such a big day, I’m predicting the entire score. Let’s hear what everyone else thinks.

Remember, the games can be seen live by clicking here.  You will also see the up-to-the-minute score scrolling on the bottom of the video feed.

Class C: No. 4 Nyack (11-5-2) vs. No. 2 Rye (9-6-2), 3 p.m.

Both teams are coming off huge wins — Nyack knocked off two-time defending champion Nanuet, while Rye avenged last year’s semifinal loss to Pearl River. The Garnets won in ‘06 and lost in OT in the ‘07 final, so a few players have championship-game experience. Both teams have plenty of scoring options, though Nyack has a dominant force in Caroline Chesterman. Normally that would make me lean toward Indians, but Rye has so many solid players (including four ESG selections) that I’m going with the Garnets. Rye 13-12. (poll prediction as of midnight Saturday: Nyack 39-13)

Class A: No. 2 Lakeland/Panas (10-5-2) vs. No. 1 Suffern (11-8), 5 p.m.

Suffern beat Lakeland/Panas 5-4 on April 6, but both young teams have improved so much since then that it’s hardly worth mentioning. Since there was so much turnover from last year, I also don’t know how much the Rebels’ wins in the past two Class A championship games matter — and if it did, would that make Suffern more likely to win because of the revenge factor, or does it show that Lakeland/Panas knows how to win the big game? Neither team has a player in the top 50 in scoring, so the question will be who steps up and scores the big goal today. Lakeland/Panas 8-7. (poll prediction: Lakeland/Panas 27-25)

Class B: No. 2 Scarsdale (10-2-3) vs. No. 1 Yorktown (17-0), 7 p.m.

Scarsdale is the second-hottest team in the section, having dominated its last nine games (all won by at least three goals). Unfortunately for the Raiders, Yorktown has won every game this season by at least three goals. I said at the beginning of the year that Yorktown would go undefeated against Section 1, and nothing has happened in the past month that would change my mind. My only concern is how they would fare if the game was ever tied or within one in the final minutes, since that’s a situation they haven’t had to face. If Scarsdale can keep it close late, it has a chance, but I think Yorktown has the game in hand well before then. Yorktown 17-12. (poll prediction: Yorktown 49-3)

    harold,

    check that poll prediction

  2. Yorktown/Scarsdale

Shouldn’t be a close game. You can judge the talent of a team by their competition. In section 1 it would be games played against the following teams: L/P, Y-town, pac, suffern, JJ, and nanuet.

    Scarsdale’s record against those teams: 0 – 1

    Y-town’s record against those teams: 9 – 0

Scarsdale is a very disciplined team with many scoring options. The team has gotten better with each game and is very well coached. I think there could be an upset here if Scarsdale can get Yorktown to play their game.

  4. old dog

Hey old school – didn’t you say that last year too when scarsdale played yorktown in the playoffs ?

Since you may be a little senile – here was the score:

    yorktown 22 – scarsdale 9

Agreed, Yorktown is the team to beat. Scarsdale much better team this year with more experience. If they slow the pace of the game and stay even on the draw they will be dangerous. They will have to play their A game. It will be much closer than last year.

Harold…..doesn’t the poll prdiction have Nyack in the lead?

  13. lacrosse fan

I bet Scarsdale feels really good now about yelling screaming towards the Yorktown team before they were going to warm up. Congrats Town on winning it and keepin’ it classy.

As far as the Poll and how far y-town can go…it depends on when they would meet up against section 5 and Canadaigua….Harold do you know who section 1 has to play after the regionals? and where are the states being held this year?

  15. Harold Gutmann

The Section 1/2/9 region meets the Section 5/6 region (Rochester/Buffalo) in the semifinals. Long Island plays Syracuse in the other semifinal. The semis and finals are once again at SUNY Cortland

You got to be kidding me. Scarsdale girls showed class last night in playing hard and losing to a great team. You must have a chip on your shoulder for some reason because your commment is s stretch, to say the least. Maybe you have been reading the boys lacrosse blog. Great games by all at the sections yesterday and good luck to the three winners, make Section One proud.

  17. Well, well now

Nice picture on LoHud of Jaimie Morrison with a Scarsdale girl hanging on her back and jabbing a sitck in her neck. Funny how some calls get made and others dont. Great picture by the photo man!
