Yorktown stays unbeaten

April
18

Yorktown went up 7-2 at halftime and wound up with an 11-6 win over Suffern today. Jaimie Morrison and Amanda Trendell both had three goals and an assist for the Cornhuskers, while Meg McNally scored four times for Suffern. Colleague Mike Dougherty was there, and I’ll link to his story tomorrow.

I have a few more scores to report so far, including a big result for Bronxville at Lakeland. The Rebels needed a late goal by Megan Bozek off a Bridget McGovern pass with 25 seconds left to end in a 10-10 tie against the Broncos, who had started 0-3. Kelsey Bub had four goals and one assist for the Rebels. Christie Bonfiglio and Megan Murray each had two goals and one assist for the Broncos.

Molly O’Brien and Kerry O’Callaghan of Rye and Emily Biondi of Brewster all scored four goals in Rye’s 12-9 win over the Bears. … Lauren Kahn had four goals and five assists and Courtney McGrath had five goals and two assists for Nanuet in a 15-13 win over Masconomet (Mass.). … Amanda Tuck had four goals and an assist and Lauren Rush had three goals and an assist as Mamaroneck won 14-11 over Putnam Valley, who got two goals and four assists from Ashley Morgan. … And Katy Stillwagon scored seven goals and Sarah Meisler had four goals and three assists in New Rochelle’s 17-6 win over Hen Hud.

Turnaround at Fox Lane

April
17

After losing to John Jay 18-9 on April 1, Fox Lane beat the Indians 15-12 on Friday. “The girls are working hard and improving each day and it showed,” coach Bill Broggy said. Lindsey Toppe scored six goals, Sammy Jo Tracy had three goals and two assists and sophomore Nelli Mitchell got some critical draws and played great defense in the win. Casey Bocklet had five goals and an assist for the Indians.

I believe this is the second Division Two school to beat a Division One school, following Pleasantville’s win over Greeley.

Here were the other scores from tonight: Alex Lugovina had four goals and an assist and Haley Dumke had two goals and three assists as Edgemont defeated Tappan Zee 13-10. … Deanna Frugis had five goals and Julia Primps had four goals in Ossining’s 17-13 win over Byram Hills. … Emily Masseo scored six goals in White Plains’ 13-2 win over Eastchester. … Allie Kronthal scored four times as Hackley defeated Poly Prep 10-8. … And Mackenzy Ryan recorded a hat trick as Mahopac fell to Kingston 11-6.

A reminder will be broadcasting Saturday’s Yorktown-Suffern girls lacrosse game live at 11 a.m. Just click on this link to watch the game, or you can watch a replay on demand throughout the day.

It’s a full schedule tomorrow: Brewster-Rye, Bronxville-Lakeland/Panas, Mamaroneck-Putnam Valley, White Plains-Arlington, Hen Hud-New Rochelle, Ursuline-Briarcliff, Pearl River-Albertus Magnus, Hackley-Portledge and Holy Child-Hamden Hall. It should be beautiful so enjoy the games, and then come on here and let us all know what happened.

Yorktown’s biggest competition?

April
17

I’m sure that Yorktown is only focused on its next opponent. But that won’t stop me from looking ahead. Check out a potential opponent in the Class B state tournament, Canindaigua. The Braves just got back from a three-game road trip where they beat two nationally-ranked teams from Maryland, and then lost by 1 to the No. 1 team in the country. Junior midfielders Abbey Friend and Taylor D’Amore have given verbal commitments to North Carolina and Johns Hopkins. The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle has the whole story here.

We had some more late scores from Thursday night: Sharon Cranwell had five goals and one assist and Hannah Tavella added four goals and two assists as Putnam Valley beat North Salem 20-7. According to the coach who called in, Lily Krenza made 26 saves, so that means PV took 46 shots — can anyone there verify this? If so that has to be a season-high. Also, Sara Misisco scored six goals as Harrison beat Clarkstown North 17-8, Hayley Serebransky scored three goals in Pelham’s 7-6 win over Sleepy Hollow, and Lauren Kahn had five goals and three assists as Nanuet beat Bronxville 12-6.

Now on to Friday, where there’s seven games on the slate: Hackley-Poly Prep, Edgemont-Tappan Zee, Byram Hills-Ossining, Blind Brook-Wappingers, Mahopac-Kingston, Eastchester-White Plains and John Jay-Fox Lane. I’m in the office again tonight so I’ll be back later with some score updates.

Rye and Pearl River tie 9-9

April
16

Rye’s Molly O’Brien (above) scored with 20 seconds left as the Garnets tied Pearl River 9-9.

Pearl River had come back from an 8-4 deficit with five straight goals, taking the lead when Kelly Mastrovito scored with 4:20 remaining.

Mastrovito and Molly Davin both scored three times for Pearl River, while Kerry O’Callaghan (below) scored three times for Rye.

(update, 10 p.m.): There were a lot more ties today in the power league, including a great one at Lakeland that ended 9-9. After Christine Feighan scored with 37 seconds left to give Brewster the lead, Bridget McGovern scored the equalizer with four seconds left for the Rebels. Also, North Rockland tied Scarsdale 7-7. Taylor Moore led the Red Raiders with four goals and Jennie Pechman had two goals and an assist for the Raiders.

Here are some more results: Also, Amanda Tuck and Lauren Rush each had three goals and an assist as Mamaroneck fell to Corcoran (Syracuse) 14-13. … Meg McNally and Maggie Sharp scored twice as Suffern fell to Morristown Moorestown (N.J.) 14-5. … Kiley Meghan had three goals and three assists as Hen Hud beat Keio 16-4. … Hadley Duncan and Ryan Maggie each had six points as Holy Child beat Greens Farms Academy 13-9 to improve to 3-1, its best start in history. … Dana Borelli had four goals and an assist as Hastings beat Blind Brook 20-1. … And Hannah Lowentheil had three goals and an assist as RCDS lost 16-9 to Convent of the Sacred Heart.

Putnam Valley’s Morgan first to hit milestone

April
16

The first notebooks are out today, one for Westchester/Putnam and one for Rockland. The W/P notebook features Ashley Morgan, who became the first player in Putnam Valley’s two-year history to reach 100 goals. Justin Jones’s Rockland notebook features Nanuet’s K.C. Jentzen and Lauren Kahn both getting to 100 in the same game. Both notebooks also look ahead to big games in the upcoming week.

Today I’ll be at Pearl River-Rye, a rematch of the teams in last year’s Class C sectional semifinal, which Pearl River won 11-9. That headlines what is the biggest day of the season so far, numbers-wise, as more than half the teams in our area will be in action.

There’s Scarsdale-North Rockland, Bronxville-Nanuet, Brewster-Lakeland/Panas, Harrison-Clarkstown North, Putnam Valley-North Salem, Sleepy Hollow-Pelham, Hen Hud-Keio, Albertus-Ardsley and Hastings-Blind Brook. Also, Mamaroneck, White Plains, Arlington and Suffern will all be facing out-of-area opponents. If anyone has any updates please post them here. I’ll be back tonight with an update from Rye.

Power rankings

April
16

Even though all 15 teams in the power league have only played between 2-4 games, Yorktown is the only team that’s unscathed. So the Cornhuskers have a lock on the top spot.

After that, I would imagine that 10 different people have 10 different opinions. What do you do when Suffern beats Mahopac, Mahopac beats Pearl River, and Suffern beats Pearl River? No matter what, someone is getting ranked below a team it beat. Here’s what I came up with:

1. Yorktown (4-0): The Cornhuskers have searched all over for top competition, beating Ward Melville (L.I.) and Mountain Lakes (N.J.) as well as Nanuet and Mahopac.

2. Nanuet (1-2): The two-time Class C champions have played a tough early schedule, with losses to Yorktown and Auburn (Section 3).

3. Suffern (3-1): Wins against Lakeland/Panas and Mahopac show that Suffern could be the team to beat in Class A.

4. Lakeland/Panas (3-1): The Rebels have allowed just 12 goals in their last three games.

5. Hackley (4-0): The Hornets beat Fieldston 16-6 on Tuesday, the same team it beat 9-8 in the NYSAIS final last year.

On the cusp: John Jay (2-0-2), Pearl River (1-1-1) and Mamaroneck (2-1-1): John Jay tied Pearl River and Mamaroneck. All three teams have exciting offenses and good returning talent.

Also receiving votes: Scarsdale (0-0-2) hasn’t lost (or won). Four of Nyack (3-1)’s first six games are against Division Two. Mahopac (1-4) has played a brutal schedule so far. Greeley (2-2) has two power-league wins, against Bronxville and Brewster, but fell to Division Two Pleasantville. Rye (1-1) and Brewster (1-1-1) also have some nice results so far.

April
15

Just got the score from Mahopac, where Yorktown continued its unbeaten season with a 13-6 win. Jaimie Morrison had five goals and an assist, Lindsay Scott had four goals and Lauren Hayes made 12 saves. Megan Doyle scored three goals for Mahopac.

(update: 10:30 p.m.) Here’s some more results from tonight:

Putnam Valley scored six unanswered goals in a 15-10 win over Edgemont. Melina Juliano had four goals and two assists in the win. … Lindsey Ferris had a hat trick as Kennedy defeated Irvington 11-8. … Kari McWalters had five goals and an assist as Hastings beat Hen Hud 13-5. … Carly Dumas had five goals in Briarcliff’s 13-8 win over Ardsley. … And Erin Riley had four goals as Clarkstown South beat Byram Hills 12-7.

Class B contenders tie

April
15

We had 11 games reported Tuesday, the most of any day so far this season. For me the most interesting was the 12-12 tie between Brewster and Scarsdale, two teams with a lot of returning talent that could challenge in Class B. Lindsay Biondi and Sarah Hogan scored in the final 1:22 to tie the game for the Bears. Nicole Rafajac scored six goals for the Raiders.

Here’s the rest of the scores: K.C. Jentzen scored five goals and Lauren Kahn had three goals and four assists as Nanuet fell to Auburn 13-12. … Liana Ballas had four goals and an assist in Irvington’s 15-6 win over Yonkers. … Lindsey Toppe had eight goals and three assists in Fox Lane’s 18-6 win over Tappan Zee. … Kaitlyn Nealon scored four goals as Somers beat Albertus 8-6. … Hannah Lowentheil scored three times as RCDS beat KLHT 8-7. …  Terese Buechi scored the winner with 25 seconds left as South beat North Salem 11-10. Marissa Dale had seven goals in the loss. … Hadley Duncan had nine goals and Charlotte Tierney had seven as Holy Child defeated Masters 21-12. … Allie Kronthal scored five goals in Hackley’s 16-6 win over Fieldston. … Amanda Tuck had four goals and two assists to lead Mamaroneck past Clarkstown North 19-11. … And Sarah Meisler scored seven times and Katy Stillwagon had six in New Rochelle’s 18-13 win over Pelham.

Another big day today: Yorktown-Mahopac, Hastings-Hen Hud, Briarcliff-Ardsley, Irvington-Kennedy, Wappingers-Eastchester, Sleepy Hollow-Pelham, Clarkstown South-Byram Hills, Pleasantville-Ossining and Edgemont-Putnam Valley.

I’m in the office tonight so I’ll update scores as we get them. Also, I know records and standings are hard to come by on our site, so I’ll compile and post them later tonight. And tomorrow’s paper will have the first power rankings, so this is your last chance to make a case for someone.

Behind-the-scenes look at new leagues

April
14

Next year every sport but football will be going to geography-based leagues. But girls lacrosse is the first sport to switch over, changing its format from traditional power leagues. My article today takes a behind-the-scenes look at that decision and what it means — positives like less travel and more backyard rivalries, and negatives like unbalanced schedules and less competition.

What does everyone out there think about the new league alignments so far?

You can also read my article from North Rockland-Lakeland/Panas by clicking here, and you can watch a video replay of the game by going to this site and clicking the “on demand” button on the bottom. It was our first time broadcasting girls lacrosse so we’re interested in your feedback.

We have a big day of lacrosse today. (correction: Two Rockland schools play out-of-area teams — Suffern-Ithaca and Nanuet-Auburn) and two up-and-coming Class B programs meet with Scarsdale-Brewster. We also have Tappan Zee-Fox Lane, Albertus Magnus-Somers, Clarkstown South-North Salem, New Rochelle-Pelham, Greeley-Pleasantville, Yonkers-Irvington and Clarkstown North-Mamaroneck.

Jentzen and Kahn both get No. 100

April
13

Nanuet juniors K.C. Jentzen and Lauren Kahn both scored their 100th goals today. Jentzen (above, against Yorktown last week) finished with seven goals and an assist and Kahn had five goals and three assists as Nanuet defeated Mahopac 17-13. Megan Doyle scored five goals for the Indians.

In another Rockland-North matchup, John Jay and Pearl River tied 16-16. Casey Bocklet had eight goals and an assist for the Indians and Molly Davin had five goals and an assist for the Pirates. It was also good to see that Julie McBrien was back for Pearl River and scored four times (she was pictured on the blog getting a stick to the head last week).

We had four other games tonight. Kelsey Horton had seven goals and an assist as Arlington beat Ossining 21-14. Caitlin Malone had five goals for Ossining. … Melina Juliano had five goals and two assists and Ashley Morgan had four goals and four assists as Putnam Valley beat Clarkstown North 20-10. Mallori Seliger had six goals for the Rams. … Haley Greenberg had three goals and an assist in Hackley’s 16-8 win over Horace Mann. … And Julia Martino scored four goals and Emily Masseo had three goals and two assists as White Plains beat Harrison 13-5.

Rebels get past North Rockland

April
13

Casandra Honovich (right) had three goals and two assists as Lakeland/Panas defeated North Rockland 8-5 today. Kelsey Bub had two goals and an assist for the Rebels (3-1).

Taylor Moore had three goals and Anna Berman made 13 saves for the Red Raiders (1-1-1).

Lakeland/Panas led 6-1 late in the first half. North Rockland cut it to 7-5 with 10 minutes left, but Rebels goalie Alex Fitzpatrick stopped two 8-meter shots and Honovich scored an insurance goal with 2:26 to play.

You can watch a video replay of the game by going to this site and clciking the “on demand” button on the bottom.

Weekend wrap

April
12

There wasn’t much action on this holiday weekend, but Justin Jones saw Nyack score the first 10 goals in a 14-4 win over Tappan Zee 14-4. Here is his article.

Yorktown stayed undefeated with an impressive 14-6 win over Mountain Lakes (N.J.), which came in 3-0 and ranked No. 12 in The Star-Ledger Top 20. Jaimie Morrison had four goals and three assists for the Cornhuskers (3-0). … Mackenzy Ryan had five goals and an assist as Mahopac fell to Lindenhurst 11-8 out in Long Island… And North Rockland got past Albertus Magnus 6-3 at home. Taylor Moore scored three times, Morgan McGowan had two goals and two assists and Anna Berman made seven saves for the Red Raiders.

The schedule picks up with six games today. I’ll be at Lakeland to see the Rebels face North Rockland, a rematch of last year’s sectional semifinal. I think this is an important game for the Red Raiders, who haven’t had a very impressive start. I always assumed Class A would again be a four-team race (along with Suffern and Mahopac), but maybe it’s just three teams this year? We should have a better idea after tomorrow.

Also on the schedule is Nanuet-Mahopac, John Jay-Pearl River, Clarkstown North-Putnam Valley, Arlington-Ossining and Harrison-White Plains. Even though the first three games involve teams from different leagues, they are examples of the mandatory crossover games that will count on a team’s record when it comes to seeding.

Who’s No. 2?

April
10

Yorktown put together a dominant 30 minutes yesterday, double-teaming and sliding effectively on defense and moving the ball really well on offense and dominating the draws. Then Nanuet — with four starters having just come over from winning a Federation championship in basketball — kicked into gear in the final 20 minutes, using its impressive speed and determination to mount a comeback.

You can read more about Yorktown’s 17-14 win in today’s article. If the first power rankings came out today, the Cornhuskers would be at the top, without a doubt. But who would be No. 2?

There’s been a lot of parity so far this season — just look at the Pearl River-Suffern-Mahopac, where the Pirates beat the Mounties, the Mounties beat the Indians, and the Indians beat the Pirates. Some of the usual powers (Suffern, Lakeland/Panas) need to replace a lot of stars from last year — should they be ranked below teams like Mahopac and Scarsdale who return a lot but haven’t won the big games yet? Or what about a Class C team like Nanuet or Pearl River?

As it turns out, the first girls lacrosse notebook of the season won’t be coming out until Thursday, so I will be releasing the first power rankings then. But who does everyone out there think is the second-best team in Section 1 right now?

Yorktown defeats Nanuet 17-14

April
9

Jaimie Morrison, Patricia Kaishian (right), Gabrielle Veteri and Lindsay Scott all scored three goals as Yorktown defeated Nanuet 17-14 today. Morrison also had four assists and was outstanding on draws.

The Cornhuskers went up 16-7 with 18 minutes left before Nanuet ended on a 7-1 run. The Golden Knights offense was led by Lauren Kahn (three goals, five assists) and K.C. Jentzen (four goals), who won the Federation basketball tournament less than two weeks ago.

Shocking score from Rockland

April
9

Yesterday was the most surprised I’ve been by a score all season — Division II Clarkstown South tied Division I (and Class A contender) North Rockland 9-9. Erin Riley had five goals and two assists for the Vikings, who was ranked ninth (last) in the county in the preseason. Very impressive, though I guess I shouldn’t have been totally surprised since someone posted the following comment five days ago: “Harold make sure you check out the South Team. Mostly Fresman and Sophs. Freshman goalie, very very good.”

Unfortunately I don’t think South has any more games left against Division I teams, but they’re a definitely sleeper team in the Class B playoffs.

I was at Pearl River-Mahopac yesterday. Here’s more details about the Indians balanced scoring attack, which put up 15 goals after being held to four against Suffern.

The most exciting game was at Brewster. Amy Morgan scored the winner off an assist from Kelsey Hill with 2:50 left as Greeley defeated the Bears 13-12. The Quakers scored the last three goals of the game. Sisters Emily and Lindsay Biondi each had four goals and an assist for Brewster. Hill had four goals and two assists for Greeley.

And Meaghan Butler had five goals and two assists and Kristina Howe had three goals and four assists as Pleasantville defeated Putnam Valley 22-12.

We have two games on the schedule today. Tappan Zee is playing Valley Central this morning, and at 1 p.m. I will be watching two-time Class B champ Yorktown host two-time Class C champ Nanuet. I’ll be back with a report from Yorktown later this afternoon. In the meantime I hope everyone is following the discussion in the previous post.

Time for helmets?

April
8

The photo on the right, courtesy of LoHud’s Joe Larese, shows Pearl River senior Julie McBrien getting whacked in the head by a Mahopac defender earlier today.

McBrien was taken to Nyack Hospital, and though it turns out she doesn’t have a broken nose, she does have a swollen face and she left a lot of blood on the Mahopac turf.

Which begs the question — is it time for girls lacrosse players to wear helmets? The Indians have already had two varsity and two junior varsity players suffer concussions. The players are stronger and faster. Other sports like basketball and hockey have consistent rules and equipment for boys and girls.

I’ve heard the argument that helmets would open the door for a more physical game, but it seems like that’s happening anyway. What does everyone out there think?

Mahopac beats Pearl River 15-10

April
8

Six players scored multiple goals and Gina Molfetta made 16 saves as Mahopac defeated Pearl River 15-10 today in a blustery morning at Mahopac.

The Indians scored six straight goals to end the first half with a 10-3 lead, and didn’t allow the Pirates to get closer than four the rest of the way.

Mackenzy Ryan had three goals and two assists to lead Mahopac, while Kiara McMullen scored three times for Pearl River. Both teams are now 1-1.

Eight goals for O’Brien

April
8

Rye bounced back from an opening loss to L/P in a big way, defeating Bronxville 15-5 yesterday. Molly O’Brien had eight goals and three assists, which is the most goals and points I’ve seen this season. Emma Tucci added five more goals.

Meanwhile, the Rebels also got back on the plus side, beating North Salem 14-2. Kelsey Bub had five goals and two assists. North Salem is coached by Jenn Pihota, who played under Sarsen at L/P. We have stats from one other Section 1 game — Carly Dumas had six goals and Olivia Glass had five as Briarcliff beat Arlington 18-9. And thanks to the bloggers for the following scores: Brewster beat Nyack 8-5 and Mamaroneck beat Tappan Zee 14-4.

It was also a big day at the private schools. In a game between two of the area’s top private schools, Hackley had four goals and an assist from Haley Greenberg and beat Holy Child 12-9. Hannah Lowentheil scored five goals as RCDS fell to Portledge 16-14, and Dana Lombardi had four goals and two assists in Harvey’s 16-6 loss to Watkinson.

There’s four games today — as I type this, Putnam Valley is playing Pleasantville. At 11 Greeley visits Brewster, and at 12:30 I’ll be at Pearl River-Mahopac. The final game is at 3:45 when Clarkstown South moves up to play North Rockland.
