Morrison and Trendell on VC Live

April
29

Yorktown captains Jaimie Morrison and Amanda Trendell (right) will be the special guests on Varsity Central Live tonight at 8. Just click here to watch and participate.

If you click the link before 8, you can see a previous episode and get a sense for the format. Basically you’re invited to ask questions during the show and Jaimie and Amanda will answer them on the air. I’ll also be hosting, so feel free to ask me any general questions about the girls lacrosse season.

Remember, the bigger response we get from the girls lacrosse community, the more likely it is that we can have more guests in the future, so hopefully we get a nice turnout. Thanks and enjoy the show. I’ll be back afterwards with results from tonight.

Mamaroneck and Rye tie again

April
27

Molly O’Brien split a double team and scored with 48 seconds to go, putting Rye on top of Mamaroneck, but Amanda Tuck (right) converted off a free position with 15 seconds to go, knotting the score at 12-12. Rye won the final draw but O’Brien’s shot went into the net a few seconds after time had expired.

The last three meetings between these teams have resulted in a pair of ties and one win for Rye, which scored in the final minute of that game. Mamaroneck visits the Garnets on May 9.

I was stuck in the office today but Mike Dougherty was there and I’ll link to his story tomorrow. Here are some more results from tonight:

Emmily VanDorn scored the winning goal with seven seconds left as Ardsley beat Sleepy Hollow 10-9. …  Sarah Quigley scored the winner with 2:15 left as Clarkstown South beat Hastings 14-13. Molly McGroary and Erin Riley each scored five goals for the Vikings

Sarah Stiefvater had five goals in Pelham’s 13-11 win over Byram Hills. …  Rita Meissner had three goals for Yonkers in a 6-2 win over Our Lady of Victory. … Lindsay Toppe had six goals and two assists as Fox Lane defeated North Salem 16-3. … Haley Greenberg had two goals and three assists as Hackley beat Horace Mann 9-7. … Jenna Paterno had five goals and two assists as Blind Brook topped Keio 15-14. … Julia Martino and Emily Masseo each had five goals and one assist as White Plains beat Ursuline 19-5. … Dana Lombardi had three goals and four assists as Harvey beat Forman 12-9. … Hadley Duncan led Holy Child with four goals and an assist in an 18-7 loss to Greenwich Academy.

I’ll be back at the end of the night with any late scores.

Two more from tonight: Melissa Shulman (eight goals) scored the last three goals of the game, including the winner with 1:56 left, as Harrison beat Edgemont 16-15.  Sara Misisco had four goals and three assists for the Huskies. Big weekend for Lakeland/Panas graduates

April
26

Lakeland/Panas graduates Mary Montesarchio (‘05) and Jackie Pierce (‘06) of Sacred Heart and Erin Goodman (‘05) of Notre Dame had quite a weekend.

Montesarchio, a senior midfielder, was named NEC Tournament MVP after Sacred Heart beat Quinnipiac 11-6 to win its second straight NEC title and advance to the NCAA play-in game against Fairfield. Pierce, a junior defender who was named to the all-tournament team, had a pair of draw wins and caused four turnovers. Montesarchio (30 goals, 18 assists) was also named all-NEC first team, while Pierce (27 ground balls, 25 draw controls and 16 caused turnovers) was second-team.

Meanwhile, senior goalkeeper Erin Goodman made nine saves and was named the Big East tournament Most Outstanding Player as Notre Dame beat Georgetown 12-10. Goodman (right, in the ‘05 sectional final against Suffern) became Notre Dame’s all-time winningest goalkeeper in the 16-13 win over Loyola on March 29.

If anyone has any updates on how other LoHud graduates are doing in college, please post them here.

Thursday schedule

April
23

Here’s the story from Nanuet’s rain-shortened victory. My Westchester/Putnam notebook puts the spotlight on Pleasantville, while Justin Jones’ Rockland notebook looks at North Rockland goalie Anna Berman and some big county matchups.

Hopefully all the rain is behind us, so we should finally have a full schedule of 12 games today: Yorktown-Greeley, Rye-John Jay, Albertus-Clarkstown South, Putnam Valley-Fox Lane, North Salem-Ossining, Edgemont-Pleasantville, Harrison-Pelham, Kennedy-Wappingers, Eastchester-Hen Hud, Yonkers-Irvington, Sleepy Hollow-New Rochelle, and White Plains-Hastings.

I won’t be in the office today, but like always, I’d appreciate any score updates from around the section.

Power rankings

April
23

There’s so much balance I’m going with a Top 10 this week. Yorktown is obviously a lock and Nanuet’s win streak solidified its status as No. 2. After that it’s anyone’s guess. Here’s mine:

1. Yorktown (6-0): Yorktown’s route to an undefeated regular season became more realistic after giving New Canaan (Conn.) it’s first loss, 15-11 on April 20.

2. Nanuet (5-2): Nanuet’s three-game win streak includes victories over previously-unbeaten Mascomet (Mass) and Class C challenger Pearl River.

3. Lakeland/Panas (4-1-2): Overcame surprising ties against Bronxville and Brewster by handing Scarsdale its first loss.

4. Pearl River (3-2-2): The Pirates beat rivals Tappan Zee and Albertus Magnus in the last week, but couldn’t finish against Nanuet. I can’t wait for the May 2 rematch.

5. Suffern (3-4): The Mounties have lost three straight games, but they were against really strong teams in Yorktown, Moorestown and Darien.

6. Scarsdale (1-1-3): After opening the season with three straight ties, the Raiders finally got a definitive result on Monday by beating Horace Greeley 14-11.

7. Rye (2-1-1): A 9-9 tie against Class C finalist Pearl River shows that the Garnets should be a threat in the postseason.

8. Hackley (6-1): I’ll have a better idea of where to slot the Hornets after their game against Scarsdale on Saturday.

9. Nyack (5-1): The Indians added two more wins but haven’t been truly tested yet. That will change next week though when they go up against Yorktown, Pearl River and Nanuet.

t10. Indians of Mahopac (3-5) and John Jay (3-2-1): Mahopac has bounced back with two straight wins after a tough start. John Jay falls after a losing to a League Two team, but has enough good results to stay in the rankings.

Chesterman joins 200 club

April
22

Caroline Chesterman scored her 200th goal with 1:25 left in Nyack’s 14-9 win over Somers. The senior finished with five goals and five assists. Justin Jones talked to her afterwards:

“With three minutes left I still had two goals to go and I could hear all my friends in the stand yelling 198, so I definitely didn’t think I  was going to get it in this game —  but I’m glad I did,” Chesterman said. “My teammates really helped me, and after I scored the final goal they stopped the game, and my parents, family and friends came down with balloons and flowers. … Everyone was screaming, and I did it on the field I know best, so I was happy. It would’ve been much different if I did it away. Plus we also got the win, which was great.”

Also today, Mackenzy Ryan got No. 100 on her eighth goal of the game as Mahopac beat Bronxville 17-11. “We were down in the first half and the second half we just turned it on,” said the Central Connecticut-bound senior. “It’s not like I planned to score eight goals, but I was just in the right place at the right time.”

Most surprising ending goes to Nanuet-Pearl River, where Nanuet was declared an 8-7 winner in a game shortened by a thunderstorm. Play was halted with 7:55 to go. After waiting the requisite half hour following a lightning delay, the officials deemed the field at Pearl River unplayable. Lisa Hattori scored the winner off an assist by Lauren Kahn with 11:25 left. According to the rules, a game is official as long as 80 percent of it has been played (in this case, 40 minutes). I’m sure Pearl River, which held a 7-5 lead, will be eager for the May 2 rematch.

More scored from around the area: After an extended halftime break (caused by a lightning delay), Lakeland/Panas defeated Scarsdale 7-6. Cassandra Honovich and Kristin Pappalardo had two goals each in the win. Margaret Souther had two goals and two assists for the Raiders. … Taylor Moore had five goals and an assist as North Rockland defeated Clarkstown North 12-9. …  Charlotte Tierney had four goals and four assists and Maggie Ryan had three goals and six assists in Holy Child’s 19-7 win over Brearley. … Maggie Sharp had three goals and two assists as Suffern fell to Darien 14-6. … Katie Byrne had two goals and three assists as Byram Hills beat Irvington 17-4.

The rest of the results from a busy Tuesday: Sarah Meisler scored eight goals for Hastings in a 17-17 tie against New Rochelle. … Jena Goettisheim and Hannah Lowentheil each had four goals and an assist as RCDS beat Holy Child 18-13. … Mallori Seliger scored six goals as Clarkstown North topped Tappan Zee 19-15. … Tara Byrne scored four times as Eastchester defeated Blind Brook 14-10. … Pleasantville stayed unbeaten with a 16-3 win over North Salem. Meghan Reda and Meghan Butler each had three goals and three assists. … And Emily Masseo had seven goals and an assist as White Plains beat Sleepy Hollow 11-8.

A few teams braved the weather today. Mackenzy Ryan scored five goals, two of which game early on in the second half to help break the 4-4 tie, as Mahopac defeated North Rockland 11-7. Morgan McGowan had a hat trick for the Red Raiders. … Haley Greenberg had four goals and Erica Khosrowshahi had a hat trick and two assists as Hackley beat Dalton 13-2. … Hannah Lowentheil had four goals and two assists in RCDS’ 12-7 win over Greens Farms. … And Alex Fritz had five goals and two assists as Byram Hills beat Yonkers 22-2. Yonkers is a combined team from all the city schools and is playing an independent schedule.

(update 10 p.m.) In a battle of unbeatens, Jamie Morrison had six goals and four assists and Amanda Trendell had three goals and three assists at Yorktown defeated New Canaan 15-11. … Lindsay Gilfeather scored four times in Pleasantville’s 12-10 win over Clarkstown South. … Lauren Murray had three goals and three assists as John Jay topped Bronxville 16-8. … And Molly Davin had six goals and two assists in Pearl River’s 15-11 win over Tappan Zee.

Also, we’re up to 22 girls who will play in college next year. See Friday’s post for the whole list, and check out our college signing database of all sports on LoHud by clicking here.

Gameface of the week

April
20

Lindsey Scott of Yorktown was the first girls lacrosse player to win Gameface of the week. Teammate Amanda Trendell looks to make it two straight. Here’s the link

There’s only seven games still on the Section 1 athletics site: Pleasantville-Clarkstown South, New Canaan-Yorktown, Byram Hills-Yonkers, North Rockland-Mahopac, Clarkstown North-Nyack, Bronxville-John Jay and Tappan Zee-Pearl RIver. I’ll be back later tonight with scores.

Monday’s schedule

April
20

We have another packed schedule today — undefeated Yorktown hosts undefeated New Canaan; Scarsdale and Greeley were pre-ranked 1 and 2 in the Southern power league; North Rockland and Mahopac are two of the top challengers in Class A; Bronxville — coming off that surprising tie against L/P — faces John Jay, which is coming off a surprising loss to Fox Lane; and can Mamaroneck stop Nanuet’s offense?

Other games include Hackley-Dalton, Pleasantville-Clarkstown South, Fox Lane-Edgemont, Putnam Valley-Harrison, Somers-Pelham, Wappingers-Briarcliff, Eastchester-Irvington, Byram Hills-Yonkers, Clarkstown North-Nyack and Tappan Zee-Pearl River.

They need me in the office again today, so please share your thoughts and scores here and I’ll be back later tonight with updates.
