Offseason message board

September
8

Good to see some people are still on the blog. It’s been a hectic summer here at The Journal News (perhaps some of you saw my work on the U.S. Open blog, though I’m guessing not), but this past weekend marked the start of the high school sports season, so I’m back and ready to talk high school girls lacrosse.

Here’s what we’ll do. If there’s something you’d like to bring up, bring it up. If there’s something you’d like to see, let me know. If you have a question, I will do my best to answer it, or I’ll find someone who can.

In the meantime, here’s a look at the future of our coverage, and I hope you’re as excited as I am. Click here for Gameday Central, and you’ll see that we just did a live streaming broadcast of the Brewster-Port Chester football game. There’s also a new-look photo gallery. It’s amazing that in the past five years we’ve added online stats, photo galleries, video highlights, and of course blogs, and we’re just getting started.

To start the offseason message board, I’ll give you what I consider the top teams in each class, in order. What does everyone else think?

Class A:
1. Lakeland/Panas: Obviously they lost a ton, including Virginia-bound Chelsea Robinson and four other all-section players. But they lost a ton last year and still won the section, so I would never count out the Rebels. Besides, there’s still a lot of talent, starting with attacker Kelsey Bub, midfielder Bridget McGovern and Cassandra Honovich, and goalie Alex Fitzpatrick.
2. Suffern: They lose their top six scorers—Jenni Califano (10 goals) is the highest-scoring returner. But they still return a stout defense (Micaela Desimone, Rebecca Morris and Kelly Moresi all started in the Class A title game) and both of their goalies.
3. North Rockland:Goalie Anna Berman is a nice piece to start with, and ESG teammate Taylor Moore will be one of the league’s top returning scorers. Chrissy Gutenberger meant a lot to this team, but the Red Raiders have become the kind of program that will be at or near the top for the near future.
4. Mahopac: Like most teams, Mahopac lost some talented girls, but the Indians are in better shape than most. They return three ESG players — goalie Gina Molfetta, attacker Mackenzy Ryan and defender Caitlin Karner — and Molfetta and Karner also earned all-section honors last year.

Class B
1. Yorktown: Jaimie Morrison (130 points last year) is the top player in the class, and I don’t see anyone really stopping her. Then throw in a lot of returning veterans like Lauren Hayes, Brittney Mabus, Amanda Trendell, Brianna Concialdi and Patricia Kaishian, and Yorktown has to be as big a favorite as there is in Section 1.
2. John Jay: The Indians struggled against a tough schedule but showed promise, tying Lakeland/Panas and Greeley and losing to Yorktown by 1. And though the four seniors they graduated were good, it means that most of the team is returning. Emma Sheeran and Hannah Lang are excellent defenders, Nicole Stiles is an ESG alternate at midfield and Casey Bocklet will be one of the most talented sophomores.
3. Scarsdale: The Raiders return a veteran offense led by all-section players Nicole Rafajac (64 goals), Margaret Souther (62 goals) and Jenny Pechman (42 goals, 30 assists). After a breakthrough year that ended in the sectional semifinals, the Raiders are definitely on the rise.
4. Mamaroneck: Another team with a lot of firepower returning, including Racquel Lividini (92 points), Charlotte Gardiner (446 goals), Amanda Tuck (39 goals) and super soph Lauren Rush (44 points). The Tigers also have some great veteran defenders, though they must replace both goalies. Three losses to Scarsdale last year keeps them down here for now.
5. Greeley: The Quakers went to the sectional final last year, but they lost more than any team ranked above them, obviously starting with Westchester/Putnam player of the year Courtney Miller, who led the universe in goals. Coach Kelly LoFaso has also retired.

Class C
1. Nanuet: The Golden Knights return eight starters from a 22-3 season. The offense is led by Lauren Kahn (151 points), K.C. Jentzen (68 goals) and Courtney McGrath (85 points), and Becky Torres, Ryan Mulligan and Caroline Dubreuil are back on defense. Goalie is the only question mark, though Allie Spagna was good in limited action last season.
2. Pearl River: Molly Davin is the only returning all-section player, but the Pirates have a lot of solid, veteran players, like attackers Julie McBrien, Alex Scott and Kelly Mastrovito and midfielders Kay Burns and Kelly Mulligan. Like Nanuet, Pearl River has to replace its goalie, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a sectional final rematch.
3. Nyack: Caroline Chesterman is my preseason player of the year in this class, but she’ll have a lot of help in the midfield this season with ESG alternates Erin McCabe and Chloe Soukas. It’s amazing that they’re the third-best Class C team in the county, but it’s true until they beat Nanuet or Pearl River, which they couldn’t do last year.
4. Rye:The Garnets are now two years removed from when they dominated Class C, but I wouldn’t count them out anytime soon. They had four ESG selections, as many as any other team — defender Juliana Kennedy and midfielders Katie Murtagh, Molly O’Brien and Emma Tucci.
