Girls lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley

Section 1 finals rescheduled

May
30

The three Section 1 finals have been moved from Saturday to Monday because of the weather forecast. The games will still be held at Tappan Zee High School, with Class C at 3, Class B at 5 and Class A at 7.

In the meantime, here’s some reading for you. I saw Lakeland/Panas come back in the second half for the third time against North Rockland, while colleague Tony Pincaro saw Pearl River avenge its previous postseason losses to Rye.

  1. Mixed Up

The only job you can do wrong 50% of the time and keep is that of a weatherman and I guess the fearless keeper of girls lacrosse is siding against the odds as well. Baseball sectional games have not be called of for Saturday. Who’s making this decision to move to Monday?

  2. on vacation

i think that being proactive and rescheduling today was the smart move. this way, people can make other plans and the kids don’t have to take bus rides and wait around for the games to be called….BUT i would have thought sunday was the day to play the games. much harder for both the parents and the students to show their support on monday. bad call. shows no respect for the fans.

  3. Harold Gutmann

The decision was made by Section 1 coordinator Steve Young, the Greeley AD.

  4. lovelax

also the 2nd empire games try out is scheduled for sunday..big conflict i would think.

  5. RockFan

What kid prepping for a section final would tire herself out and risk injury at an Empires tryout? Will that be rescheduled?

Interesting that baseball hasn’t been rescheduled based on a nebulous forcast. Did Steve Young have other plans for the weekend? I agree with ‘on vacation’.... no respect for parents/fans who will have a much harder time making the Monday games. This decision should have been made Saturday morning.

  6. perplexed

The section 1 booklet clearly states that if games are postponed, they should be played on the next available day. These games should be played on Sunday even if a new site has to be found. It is unfair to the parents and the players to move these games from the weekend to a weekday. Why should students be pulled out of classes on Monday when they could play on Sunday. Also the first regional game is scheduled for Wednesday in Albany which will leave a short turn around time for the section 1 champions and will require many of these girls to miss classes on Wednesday as well.Harold can you please find out how Mr. Young can justify this decision and perhaps you contact some of the coaches to get some feedback about their feelings on these choices and process.Thanks.

  7. girls rule

Can someone explain the process to me? Steve Young is the girls lax cordinator for section i – and is the only decision maker in this process? Isn’t there a girls lacrosse association and who is the head of this group? Did or does AD Young have conversations with this group to make the best decisions for the players? Based on the regional game schedule and the Empire schedule (as stated above) should someone be coordinating the girls calendar of events? Is Section I girls lacrosse not important enough to give our girls a fighting chance should they make it to the regional games this week? Mixed up is always asking when will the adults involved start putting the players first, I agree with the question and hope to get an answer from the real players of this silly game (not lax).

  8. The Voice

I’m sure the coaches and the AD at TZ were all consulted with in the matter. onsider the fact that the facility might not be available on Sunday (as many schools either rent it out or have rules against using it or playing on Sundays).

  9. laxx

wow!!!! Do we look like idiots now!!

  10. perplexed

the ADs involved were not consulted they were told and the coaches were the last to know and had no voice. in fact, many tried to fight the decision, postpone it until this morning, and at the very least play on sunday. whate was the rational behind cancelling yesterday afternoon? you can see from the comments above that the decision to play monday is not best for the players or teams so why believe the coaches would have accepted it? as for the facility not being available on sunday, if that is the case, it never should have been chosen to be the host. if you read the piece about potential postponements for baseball, the games would have been played tomorrow, the next available day. if you are unaware of the facts, it is important not to make assumptions. at this point in the day, the whole thing seems insane as today would have been a great day for the players to play, not a lot of sun, reasonable temperatures and they wouldn’t have to practice tomorrow, deal with missing the empire state games tryout, or having to leave class early on monday. today was probably also on the recruiting calendar for college coaches, who knows where they are scheduled to be on monday. this decision was bad for section 1 for so many reasons and it should not be taken lightly nor should the process of it. tell me, if these were the boys finals would they have been postponed yesterday?

  11. RockFan

who does steve young answer to?

  12. LaxMom

I agree that this decision REALLY messed up plans for most of us. I’m very upset that I can’t get out of work on Monday to see this game. Especially since today is such a gorgeous day. But – AD Young – to give you the benefit of the doubt, would you be able to officially tell everyone the whole story, from your viewpoint? I don’t think we know all the facts. Who you consulted with, and what specific factors were part of your decision? At this point I don’t like you very much, but perhaps I am wrong and we are all second guessing you. I would love to hear it from you directly. Specifically, why wasn’t it rescheduled to Sunday? Empire tryouts? Field availability? Someone else’s schedule we are not thinking about? Why was the decision made so early? And did you weigh those reasons against all the negative effects we are all complaining about? Etc. Maybe it made sense. Or, even if many of us still think you had poor judgement at least we will have the whole truth. I would respect you for being forthright with a complete and honest statement. If you don’t want to get involved in this blog, perhaps you can give these details to Harold Gutman or to all the coaches? Then I’m sure it will filter down. Thanks very much.

  13. just a fan

Good Luck with getting any answers, the damage is done.

  14. girls rule

Mr. Young answers to his principal at his high school. AD’s meet but no AD reaches above another.

  15. chilllax

    who made empires???

  16. hmm

same, we’re all anxious to know who made the team..

  17. Bobby Knight

I didn’t see a preview of the finals in today’s paper or on any day over the weekend. Did I miss it?
