Yorktown, Lakeland/Panas tie 9-9

Casandra Honovich scored with 1:01 left on an 8-meter shot as Lakeland/Panas tied Yorktown 9-9.
Caitlin Collins had two goals and an assist for the Rebels (10-3-1), who scored the last three goals of the game. Jaimie Morrison (above) had four goals and two assists for the Cornhuskers (9-3-1).
Here’s the article with details about Yorktown’s fast start, Lakeland’s pressure and comeback, and the tying shot that deflected off two different people. One thing that got left out for space was the play of Rebels goalie Alex Fitzpatrick, who was fantastic, especially in the second half when the Cornhuskers were held scoreless for the final 11 minutes.
“This is the last time for the seniors to come out and play, and I promised the defense I would come out strong, and I hope I made them happy,” she said after the game.
Also, here’s some video shot by Dave Kennedy.
Anyway, I promised yesterday that I saw something that I’d never seen before, so here it is. About midway through the second half, a call goes Yorktown’s way, and the Lakeland/Panas fans start screaming at the ref. Not sure what was said exactly (definitely the words “Shut up”), but the ref stops the clock and has both teams huddle up. She then has Rebels coach Sharon Sarsen to walk across the field to talk to the L/P fans. Unorthodox move, but I think it worked. That is, until after the game, when a different L/P fan told Kennedy to “shut up.”
My conclusion: there were no losers in yesterday’s tie game, except for those L/P fans.
Two players hit milestones yesterday. Emily Biondi scored her 250th goal for Brewster, and Jessi Steinberg notched her 200th for Suffern. Better still, they both won. Also yesterday, North Rockland edged closer to the No. 3 seed with a win over Mahopac, Edgemont had a nice tie against Mamaroneck, and Nanuet nearly had its first league tie, but Courtney McGrath scored the with 58 seconds left to give the Golden Knights a 15-14 win over Nyack.
Speaking of Nanuet, they were the overwhelming choice to win Class C in our latest poll. There will be a new question appearing shortly.

So what happened,,,,,,,,,,,
“I’ll have more as soon as I’m done in the office”
Is the office in Cleveland? A reporter should stick by their comments.
it’s not just the L/P parents, harold. i think that parental poor behavior is pervasive. i’m not condoning the L/P parents’ actions last night…but i can guaranty you that other teams’ parents have done the same or worse. unfortunately, this is true across all sports.
The same thing happened at a Yorktown/Greeley game when the official asked the coach to speak to the fans. The more seasoned officials do that…it is only now that we are seeing those officials at high school games since the college season is over.
Yesterday’s game between L/P and Yorktown did not unfold like that- Here is the correct story- I was there and witnesses that whole thing——
There were several bad calls made against L/P the L/P parents were upset as they should have been… a parent yelled “let’s call a fair game here ref” The official Ms. Kennedy turned to the parents and said “why don’t you just shut up” how professional….. The parent then replied “no you shut up” with that Ms Kennedy pranced across the field and called a time out.. No one approached her after the game that was not true..
She provoked the “shut up” comment.
My conclusion of the game- Ms. Kennedy was the only loser there… lets keep the facts straight….
Another point of view…
I too was at the game yesterday. I thought the female referee was good. One of the better one’s we’ve seen this year. There were many times that I thought penalties should have been called that went without a whistle. I have learned that the more experienced the referee – the less the whistle is blown. I also think that the calls were consistent; consistently called and not called, with no advantage for either team–as it should be. Coach Sars did not freak over the call and I believe that she showed respect for this referee’s ability to call a fair game. I say it was a well called game by Referee Kennedy (and I saw no prancing).
Hey Harold – Can we discuss the projections for the next rankings? I think that Yorktown should secure the #2 spot. Yorktown won the first contest with L/P (currently in 2nd spot) and now a tie of 9-9 for the second contest. Ytown dominated both games and looked to be the better team. Alex Fitzpatrick did an outstanding job for the Rebels in the goal and without her it would have been a landslide victory for Yorktown. Any thoughts?
Tradition- Coach Sarsen did not freak out when Ms. Kennedy over ruled the other official and she gave Yorktown a goal after a whistle was blown? I guess that I was watching a different game.
Is it me or does it always seem like Yorktown fans do everything in their power to belittle and question the abilities and accomplishments of rival L/P? It never seems to be the other way around…
Section 1 Fan- nobody mentioned the Yorktown Fans. They mentioned the officiating of the game.
I meant in reference to noitall’s comment, not the officiating
Noital, that was a great call and Sars handled the call well. We have all seen her reactions over the years and that was mild irritation to a good call, over ruled by the better ref. I think she was doing her job to argue the call but I think she knew the call was good – she was right there.
Section 1 fan, did allLax give a shout out to the LP goalie on her great performance…yes. I see nothing wrong with posting your points for your team. If allLax would have mentioned that the team played dirty or that the team was over rated – then I could see your point. But thinking that one team gave a stonger perfromance is not belittling the other. What are your thoughts on the next rankings?
laxgame,
Just to clear up any confusion, I said a L/P fan told the photographer Kennedy to shut up after the game, not the referee (I have no idea what her last name is).
allLax,
Head-to-head isn’t the only determining factor in the rankings (for example, I wouldn’t expect Rye to be ahead of John Jay next week on the boys side). And there are still three more games for each team before the next list comes out. That said, Yorktown has a strong case for the No. 2 spot.
I am sure Kennedy provoked the “shut up” from the L/P fans just like the referee did. And per Sars comments to the paper, Yorktown & L/P are not big rivals. Does anyone see a Lakeland pattern here?
As a bystander of the game I noticed that after EVERY call that was against them the L/P fans would yell and scream at the referees, and the referees did a pretty good job. When fans are acting like that they have no choice but to get the coaches involved, it happens, and it needed to happen.
And I do agree that Yorktown deserves the No. 2 spot, L/P never won to them so they shouldn’t be in that spot.
Didn’t town lose to North Rockland that L/p beat? Making these rankings is probably rather difficult
Mixed up-
What are you trying to say?? I don’t get it??
Lacrosse-
As for the calls that the ref made they always seemed to go Yorktowns way- so of course the L/P fans would be upset.. Obviously you are a Yorktown bystander..I think all of the girls both teams came out with their game on and they all did a great job out there….If the officiating was more legit- L/P would have won.
And obviously you are an L/P fan. If you really think that you would have won how come Sars didn’t want to go into OT? It was a really agressive game I can understand if the refs were trying to stop that, but they weren’t there in Yorktown’s favor.
Lacrosse-
There is NO overtime in girls Lax unless its a playoff or a championship game….
Plus there was another game scheduled right after the Varsity game..
lax facts,
“if the officating was more legit”...the game would have been called a mugging! There should have been two strong referees for the L/P vs. Yorktown rival game, not just one. Two pairs of eyes are needed to see all the late hits going on off ball. A mugging!
Mixed Up,
Your humor was not missed by those of us who understood. lol
