After going 0-14 last year, White Plains opened its 2008 season with an 11-6 win over Hastings. Emily Messco and Molly Kellogg had three goals each for the Tigers. Maya Meria and Kori McWalters scored two goals each for the Yellow Jackets.
Four other games were played today:
In a matchup of reigning league champions who moved up this year, Horace Greeley defeated Scarsdale 16-14. Courtney Miller had seven goals and four assists for the Quakers. Nicole Rafajac and Margaret Souther each had five goals and three assists for the Raiders.
Lakeland/Panas started its Class A sectional title defense with an 18-3 win over Rye. Chelsea Robinson had seven goals and four assists and Caitlin Collins had five goals and three assists. Erica Dinardo had a goal and an assist for the Garnets. I’m sure at this point Rye is happy they moved out of the power league, though I doubt there’s a Class C team in the state that can stay with the Rebels.
Another struggling team last year was Albertus Magnus, who went 2-14. Like White Plains, the Falcons started off on the right foot with a 13-7 win over Somers. Kerrie Cline scored five goals and Meaghan Flynn and Kerri Higgins each added three goals and an assist for the Falcons. Morgan Donahue had three goals and two assists for the Tuskers.
And Mahopac jumped out to an 11-2 halftime lead and beat Fox Lane 14-6. MacKenzy Ryan scored five goals and Lauren Rutledge recorded a hat trick in the win. Avery Laird led the Foxes with two goals.
There’s another eight games on the slate for tomorrow, and by the weekend every team will have played at least once, so stay tuned for more updates. By the way, Justin and I will each see a game this week. Justin will be at Nanuet-Yorktown Friday in a matchup of two sectional champions, while I will go to see two Class C contenders, Nyack and Rye, on Saturday.
